What “AI sovereignty” means
A simple explanation of AI sovereignty and why it’s being discussed.
AI sovereignty refers to the idea that countries or regions should have control over the AI systems they rely on, including how they are developed, trained, and deployed. This often involves building local capabilities and reducing dependence on external providers.
At its core, the discussion is about control and dependence. If key systems are created and operated elsewhere, it raises questions about influence, data ownership, and long-term resilience.
As AI becomes more embedded in infrastructure and decision-making, those concerns become more pressing.
So the question becomes: how much control is enough, and what does it take to achieve it?
