What “AI collusion” means
A simple explanation of AI collusion and why it matters.
AI collusion refers to situations where AI systems end up coordinating behaviour in ways that reduce competition or disadvantage users, without being explicitly programmed to do so. This can happen when systems optimise for similar goals and learn from similar data, leading them to arrive at the same outcomes.
For example, pricing algorithms used by different companies might independently adjust prices in response to each other, gradually pushing costs up without any direct agreement between the businesses involved.
This matters because the outcome can look like coordinated behaviour, even when no one intended it. As more decisions become automated, the line between independent behaviour and coordinated outcomes becomes harder to define.
So the question becomes: if systems align without instruction, who is accountable for the outcome?
