Your Next Household Appliance Might Use AI

When people think about artificial intelligence, they usually think about something they actively use.

A chatbot that answers questions. An app that generates images. A writing assistant that helps draft an email. Increasingly, however, AI is appearing somewhere much more ordinary.

Samsung’s latest washer dryer uses AI to optimise washing cycles, adjust settings and improve energy efficiency. From the outside, it still looks like a washing machine. The difference is that some of the decisions it once relied on people to make are increasingly being made automatically.

It’s another reminder that AI isn’t just arriving in new products. It’s quietly becoming part of products people already understand.

We’ve seen the same shift elsewhere, from wine fridges that learn cooling patterns to cars that adapt to driving conditions and household devices that optimise how they operate behind the scenes. Many people will use AI every day without ever opening a chatbot or thinking of themselves as AI users.

Perhaps that’s one of the biggest changes taking place.

The future of AI may not be defined by the tools people choose to use. It may be shaped just as much by the technology quietly finding its way into the products already sitting in our homes.
