What is Shadow AI?

Shadow AI is when employees use AI tools at work without official approval or oversight from their organisation.

That might include:

• pasting notes into OpenAI’s ChatGPT
• using AI image generators for work content
• running customer data through external AI tools
• using AI coding assistants without IT approval

Usually, it happens because people are trying to work faster or fill gaps in existing systems, not because they are trying to break rules.

The concern for organisations is that sensitive data, internal information, or business decisions may end up flowing through tools that are not monitored, secured, or properly governed.

In many ways, Shadow AI is the AI version of “shadow IT”, where unofficial technology gets adopted inside organisations before leadership fully catches up.
