What Is Real?

Much of the conversation around AI focuses on capability. New models can generate increasingly convincing text, create realistic images, clone voices and produce videos that would have seemed impossible only a few years ago. As the technology continues to improve, organisations naturally focus on what these systems can do and where they might create value.

Yet beneath many of these discussions sits a more fundamental question. As synthetic content becomes more sophisticated and easier to produce, how do people distinguish between what is genuine and what is not? The challenge is no longer simply understanding what technology can create. It is understanding how confidence and trust are maintained when the evidence people rely upon becomes increasingly difficult to verify.

During a recent conversation about digital verification and synthetic content, Brian Feeney, AI-XON posed a deceptively simple question.

The question feels significant because it reaches beyond AI itself. For decades, people have operated with a set of assumptions about evidence. A photograph captured a moment in time. A recording provided proof. A document carried a degree of authority. While manipulation was always possible, there was generally confidence that reality could be verified if necessary.

That certainty is becoming harder to maintain.

The challenge is not simply that synthetic content exists. It is that uncertainty becomes easier to create. Images can be questioned. Recordings can be challenged. Documents can be disputed. In some situations, even genuine evidence may be viewed with suspicion because the possibility of manipulation now feels more plausible than it once did.

Viewed through that lens, Brian’s question becomes much bigger than the technology itself. It touches on trust, evidence and the assumptions that underpin how organisations make decisions. If confidence in what people see, hear and read becomes harder to establish, the ability to verify information may become just as important as the ability to generate it.

As AI continues to blur the line between authentic and synthetic content, the challenge may not simply be identifying what is fake. It may be understanding what remains real.
