What is an “LLM”
What is a large language model, explained simply
An LLM, or large language model, is a type of AI trained to understand and generate human language. Tools like ChatGPT are built on LLMs.
At a basic level, an LLM learns patterns from huge amounts of text such as books, websites, and articles, then uses those patterns to predict what words should come next in a sentence.
It does not “know” things in the way a person does. It does not have opinions or experiences. It is predicting language based on probability. That is why it can sound confident even when it is wrong.
In practice, LLMs are used for drafting emails, summarising documents, answering questions, writing code, and generating ideas. They are powerful because they are flexible. The same system can handle many different tasks just by changing the prompt.
But they also have limits. They can miss context, misunderstand nuance, or generate convincing sounding mistakes. So the value is not just in what they produce. It is in how you use and question the output.
