AI Is Helping Run McDonald’s Kitchens

Busy Fast Food Kitchen

Keeping a McDonald’s restaurant running involves thousands of small decisions every day.

Equipment needs to be maintained, drive-through queues managed, orders prepared accurately and kitchens kept operating during some of the busiest periods of the day. Across more than 43,000 restaurants worldwide, even small improvements can have a significant impact.

Increasingly, AI is becoming part of that operation.

McDonald’s is using AI to monitor kitchen equipment before it fails, analyse operational data in real time, support restaurant managers, improve drive-through accuracy and identify bottlenecks that can slow service. Rather than introducing one headline feature, the company is embedding AI across multiple parts of its day-to-day operations. That changes where AI creates value.

Most customers won’t notice these systems at work. They won’t know whether AI helped predict a maintenance issue or improve the flow of orders through the kitchen. They’ll simply experience shorter waits, fewer problems and a restaurant that runs more smoothly.

It’s another reminder that some of the most significant uses of AI aren’t always the most visible. While public attention often focuses on chatbots and image generators, many organisations are finding value in something much quieter: using AI to support thousands of small operational decisions that collectively improve how a business runs.
