What Is AI Resistance?

As organisations introduce more artificial intelligence into the workplace, not everyone will immediately embrace it. AI resistance describes the reluctance or unwillingness people may feel towards adopting or using AI. That resistance can come from many places;

  • Someone might be concerned about what AI means for their job, unsure whether they can trust its output or uncomfortable using a technology they don’t fully understand.
  • Others may simply be unconvinced that AI will make their work any better, particularly if they’re being encouraged to change a process that already works well.

AI resistance isn’t necessarily the same as being anti-AI. People can recognise the potential of the technology while still questioning how, where or why it’s being introduced into their work.

Why Does It Matter?

For organisations, understanding what’s behind resistance matters because different concerns require different responses. More training might help someone who doesn’t feel confident using AI, but it won’t necessarily reassure someone worried about job security or convince an employee who hasn’t been shown how the technology will actually help them.

It’s also important not to confuse AI resistance with AI fatigue. Someone experiencing AI fatigue may already use the technology successfully but feel overwhelmed by the constant focus on it. Treating that as resistance and pushing even harder for adoption could simply make the problem worse.

Sometimes reluctance to use AI isn’t a barrier that needs to be overcome. It might be a signal worth listening to.
