What Are Motivational Maps and Why are They Important for AI?
Motivational Maps® is a workplace assessment designed to help individuals and organisations understand what motivates people at work.
The framework is based on the idea that people are driven by different motivational factors, and that understanding those motivations can improve engagement, performance and leadership. Unlike personality tests, which explore who someone is, this focuses on why they do what they do.
How Do Motivational Maps® Work?
The framework identifies nine motivational drivers, grouped into three broad areas.
Achievement
People motivated by achievement are often driven by:
- Builder – financial reward and personal success.
- Expert – developing knowledge and becoming recognised for specialist expertise.
- Director – influence, responsibility and having a certain level of autonomous control.
Relationships
Some people are motivated more by the environment around them than the work itself. These motivations include:
- Star – recognition and appreciation.
- Friend – belonging, teamwork and positive relationships.
- Defender – stability, routine and security.
Growth
Others are motivated by opportunities to develop or make a difference. These include:
- Creator – innovation and solving problems creatively.
- Spirit – freedom, autonomy and independence.
- Searcher – purpose, meaning and contributing to something bigger than themselves.
Most people have elements of all nine motivations, but at different levels. The assessment helps identify which are currently strongest and which are less important.
Why Does It Matter In The Age Of AI?
As organisations introduce AI, roles are beginning to change. Tasks are automated, responsibilities evolve and the nature of work shifts. That means AI may affect people differently depending on what motivates them.
For example, someone who enjoys routine may react differently to automation than someone motivated by creativity or autonomy. Equally, someone whose identity is built around being the recognised expert may experience AI differently as information becomes more widely accessible.
Understanding those differences can help leaders think beyond productivity and consider how AI may influence engagement, motivation and fulfilment at work.
While Motivational Maps® is just one framework for understanding workplace motivation, it highlights an important point: successful AI adoption isn’t only about introducing new technology. It’s also about understanding the people whose work is changing.
