You Can’t Policy Your Way Into Adoption
As organisations develop AI strategies, governance is often one of the first topics to emerge. Policies, frameworks and guidelines can help create consistency, reduce risk and establish clear expectations around how new technologies should be used.
During our conversation, Rob Clarke from Elev-8 Performance suggested that governance is only part of the story.
Rob’s observation highlights a challenge many organisations are beginning to encounter. While policies can define what people should do, they do not automatically create confidence, trust or engagement.
People still need to understand the value of the technology. They need the confidence to experiment, the skills to use it effectively and the trust that they will be supported as they learn.
The challenge facing many organisations is not a lack of rules. It is helping people move from awareness to action. Governance can create the conditions for adoption, but it cannot create adoption itself.
Ultimately, technology becomes embedded through people, not policies.
As AI adoption continues to grow, the organisations that succeed may not be the ones with the longest rulebooks. They may be the ones that invest just as much effort in confidence, capability and culture as they do in governance.
