What Is Human-in-the-Loop?

Human-in-the-loop describes an AI-supported process where a person remains involved in checking, guiding or making decisions rather than leaving everything entirely to the AI.

What that human involvement looks like can vary considerably. Someone might review an AI-generated answer before it is sent to a customer, approve a decision suggested by an AI system or step in when the AI isn’t confident about what to do next.

Why Does Human-in-the-Loop Matter?

Keeping a person involved can provide an extra layer of judgement, particularly when a decision is complicated, sensitive or could have significant consequences. The human can bring context and experience that the AI may not have, as well as taking responsibility for the final decision.

But simply having a human somewhere in the process doesn’t automatically mean there is meaningful oversight. If someone is expected to approve hundreds of AI decisions without properly checking them, or simply accepts whatever the AI recommends, the human may technically be in the loop without adding very much.

The important question isn’t only whether a human is involved, but what they’re actually there to do.
