What is “bioacoustics”
A simple explanation of bioacoustics and how AI is used within it.
Bioacoustics is the study of sounds produced by living organisms, animals, insects, and even whole ecosystems.
It’s used to understand behaviour, track species, and spot changes in the environment.
AI is increasingly being used to analyse large volumes of audio. For example, systems can scan hours of forest recordings to detect specific animal calls, or pick up patterns that would be easy to miss manually.
That makes it possible to monitor biodiversity at a much larger scale, and over longer periods of time.
Rather than replacing human expertise, AI helps filter and surface the most relevant signals within all that noise.
Which raises a different question: if we can “listen” at scale, what might we start to notice that we’ve been missing?
