What is “AI confusion”

A simple explanation of AI confusion and how it shows up

AI confusion describes those moments when an AI system seems to understand a request, but the response doesn’t quite land. It might be technically relevant, but slightly off in a way that’s hard to pin down.

For example, a system might answer the question on the surface, but miss the nuance of what was actually being asked. It can also blur similar concepts or respond in a way that feels just a bit disconnected from the original prompt.

Part of the issue is how these systems work. They rely on recognising patterns rather than genuinely understanding meaning, which means they can follow the shape of a question without fully grasping its intent.

Often, this shows up as small inconsistencies rather than obvious mistakes.

So the question becomes: how do we spot when AI has followed the pattern, but missed the point?
