What “automation bias” means

bias scales

A simple explanation of automation bias and why it affects decision-making

Automation bias describes the tendency to trust and follow the output of a system, even when it might be wrong.

For example, if a system flags a customer as low risk, someone might accept that assessment without questioning it, even if there are signs that don’t quite fit. The presence of the system subtly shifts how the decision is made.

The issue isn’t necessarily the system itself, but how people respond to it. When something appears consistent and authoritative, it can feel harder to challenge.

In practice, that can lead to over-reliance, especially in environments where speed and efficiency matter.

So the question becomes: when does support turn into dependence?
