AEO vs SEO

What changes when we optimise for answers, not search?

SEO has traditionally been about helping people discover content. You create something useful, structure it well, and aim to appear when someone searches for a topic.

But as AI tools become part of how people access information, the dynamic starts to shift. Instead of scanning lists of links, people are increasingly being given direct answers, summarised, interpreted, and presented in a single response. That is where AEO, or answer engine optimisation, starts to come in.

The goal is no longer just to be found. It is to be used.

That changes how content works online. It needs to be clear enough for AI systems to extract from, structured enough to interpret, and credible enough to be surfaced in answers that may not visibly link back to the original source. In that sense, visibility becomes less about clicks, and more about influence.

But there is a tension here.

If answers are increasingly generated rather than discovered, what happens to the original sources behind them? And how do publishers, creators, and websites measure value when the interaction happens one step removed from their content?

It is not that SEO disappears. It is that it starts to share space with something new.

The shift is subtle, but important. The question is no longer just: “How do I get people to my content?” Increasingly, it may become: “How does my content become part of the answer?”
