What Is A Large Action Model (LAM)?

A Large Action Model (LAM) is an AI system designed to carry out tasks rather than simply generate information.

While a Large Language Model (LLM) can answer questions, write emails and summarise documents, a LAM is designed to take action. It can interact with software, navigate websites, complete forms and carry out a series of steps to achieve a goal.

How Is It Different From An LLM?

The simplest way to understand the difference is:

  • LLM: “Here’s how you could do it.”
  • LAM: “I’ll do it for you.”

For example, an LLM might help you plan a business trip by suggesting flights, hotels and an itinerary. A LAM could potentially book the flights, reserve the hotel and add the itinerary to your calendar.

Why Does It Matter?

Large Action Models are part of a broader shift towards AI systems that can complete tasks rather than simply respond to prompts. That creates new opportunities for automation, but it also raises important questions about oversight, permissions and accountability. The more AI can do on our behalf, the more organisations need to decide what it should, and shouldn’t, be allowed to do.
