What is “synthetic media”

A simple explanation of synthetic media and how it’s used.

Synthetic media refers to content that is fully or partially generated by AI, including images, video, audio, and text. Unlike deepfakes, which often focus on mimicking real people, synthetic media can also include entirely new, AI-generated content.

For example, AI-generated presenters, voices, or images that don’t correspond to real individuals all fall into this category.

In practice, that opens up a lot of use cases. Synthetic media is already being used in areas like training, entertainment, and content creation, where speed and scale matter.

But it also shifts something more fundamental. The line between what is real and what is created becomes less clear.

Does it matter if something isn’t real, as long as it feels real?
