What “Cognitive Debt” means
What is cognitive debt, explained in plain English
Cognitive debt is what builds up when we rely on tools like AI to do thinking for us, without fully understanding or checking the output.
It is similar to technical debt in software. You take a shortcut now and it works, but over time the cost catches up with you.
In practice, cognitive debt shows up in small ways. Copying AI generated text without really reading it. Accepting a summary without questioning what is missing. Using outputs that sound right but have not been properly tested.
Nothing breaks immediately. That is the tricky part.
But over time, your ability to spot errors, challenge ideas, or think things through from first principles can quietly weaken. You are still producing work, but doing less of the thinking behind it.
AI does not create cognitive debt on its own. It just makes it easier to accumulate.
The question is not whether you use AI. It is whether you stay mentally in the loop when you do.
