What the “trust dilemma” means (in AI)

What is the trust dilemma in AI? A simple explanation of when to rely on AI and when to question it.

The trust dilemma describes a growing tension. If you trust AI too much, you risk acting on something that’s wrong. If you don’t trust it enough, you miss the value it’s meant to provide.

AI systems can be fast, confident, and often right. But they can also make mistakes that look believable. That’s what makes it tricky. Do you double-check everything and slow things down, or rely on it and accept some level of risk?

This shows up in everyday situations, from customer service agents using AI suggestions to recruiters screening candidates. The question isn’t just “is this accurate?” but “how much should I rely on it?”

The challenge isn’t just technical. These systems are designed to assist, but people still have to decide when to trust them, when to question them, and when to override them.
