It’s easy to assume misinformation from AI is intentional. That it’s being designed to mislead or distort. But most of the time, it isn’t.
AI generates misinformation as a by-product of how it works. It predicts what a response should look like based on patterns it has seen before. That means it’s focused on producing something that sounds right, not something that has been verified as true.
When that prediction process works well, the output feels helpful and coherent. When it doesn’t, it can still sound just as convincing. That’s where the problem starts.
A response might include invented details, misinterpreted facts, or subtle distortions of the original information. None of it is presented as uncertain. It arrives fully formed, with the same tone and confidence as a correct answer.
That makes it difficult to spot. The issue isn’t always obvious errors, but the way inaccurate information blends in with everything else.
Scale adds another layer. When content can be generated quickly and repeatedly, those small inaccuracies can spread far more easily than before.
So the challenge isn’t just that AI can get things wrong. It’s that it can do so in a way that feels reliable.
And that raises a more practical question: if misinformation doesn’t always look wrong, how do we decide what to trust?
