What Is Temperature In AI?
Temperature is a setting that affects how predictable or varied an AI model’s responses are. A lower temperature tends to make the AI choose more predictable answers, while a higher temperature gives it more freedom to choose less obvious ones.
For example, if you asked an AI to suggest names for a new coffee shop, a lower temperature might produce fairly safe and straightforward suggestions. Turn the temperature up and you might start getting more unusual or unexpected ideas.
Why Does Temperature Matter?
Different tasks benefit from different levels of variation. If you’re asking AI to extract information from a document or answer a factual question, you probably don’t want it getting particularly creative. If you’re brainstorming ideas, writing fiction or looking for lots of different possibilities, more variation might be useful.
Temperature doesn’t make an AI more or less intelligent, and turning it down doesn’t guarantee that an answer will be correct. It simply changes how much variation the model has when deciding what to generate.
You also won’t always see a temperature setting when using everyday AI tools, as it may be controlled behind the scenes. But when people talk about adjusting an AI model’s temperature, they’re essentially talking about how predictable they want its responses to be.
