AI Moves Into the Giraffe Enclosure

Giraffes in the Zoo

At a zoo in Hampshire, researchers are developing AI-powered systems that analyse footage from cameras to track how giraffes move, behave, and interact with their environment. The aim is to identify subtle changes that could signal illness, injury, stress, or other welfare concerns.

Rather than replacing the expertise of zookeepers, the technology acts as an additional set of eyes. It can help spot patterns that may be difficult to detect through occasional observations alone, particularly during overnight periods or across large enclosures.

The project highlights a side of AI that often receives less attention. While much of the public conversation focuses on chatbots and workplace automation, AI is increasingly being used in areas such as conservation, agriculture, healthcare, and animal welfare.

In practice, the technology is looking for patterns. Changes in movement, posture, feeding behaviour, or activity levels can all provide clues about an animal’s wellbeing. By analysing this information continuously, AI may help staff identify potential issues earlier and respond more quickly.

It’s a reminder that some of the most useful applications of AI aren’t always the most visible. Sometimes they’re simply helping people care for animals more effectively by drawing attention to things that might otherwise go unnoticed.
