What “deepfakes” means

A simple explanation of deepfakes and why they matter.

Deepfakes are synthetic media, usually video or audio, where someone’s likeness is digitally altered or generated to make it appear as though they said or did something they didn’t.

For example, a video might show a public figure speaking words they never actually said, created using AI models trained on their voice and appearance.

The challenge is how convincing these outputs can be. As the technology improves, the gap between real and manipulated content becomes harder to spot.

That starts to affect something bigger: trust. In news, politics, and everyday online content, it becomes less clear what can be taken at face value.

If seeing isn’t always believing, what do we rely on instead?
