What is the “EU AI Act”

framework

A simple explanation of the EU AI Act and why it matters

The EU AI Act is a regulatory framework designed to govern how AI systems are developed and used within the European Union. It takes a risk based approach, categorising systems by their potential impact.

Higher risk systems, such as those used in hiring, credit scoring, or law enforcement, face stricter requirements around transparency, accountability, and oversight. Lower risk systems have fewer obligations.

The aim is to create clearer rules around how AI should be used, particularly in situations where decisions directly affect people.

What makes this significant is that it sets a precedent. Even for organisations outside the EU, it may influence how AI systems are designed and deployed.

So the question becomes, how do you regulate something that is still evolving?
