What is the “AI Security Institute (AISI)”

A simple explanation of the UK’s AI Security Institute and its role

The AI Security Institute (AISI) is a UK government funded organisation focused on understanding and testing the risks associated with advanced AI systems. It was originally introduced as the “AI Safety Institute”, and while that name is still used in some contexts, the shift towards “security” reflects a broader focus on issues like misuse, resilience, and national level risks.

Rather than building products, the institute focuses on assessing existing and emerging models. This includes testing how systems respond in edge cases, identifying vulnerabilities, and working with developers to improve safeguards.

The aim is to create a clearer understanding of how AI systems operate in practice, especially as they become more powerful and widely used.

What makes this notable is the move towards independent scrutiny, rather than relying solely on companies to assess their own systems.

So the question becomes, who should be responsible for testing how safe AI really is?
