What is “AI slop”
A simple explanation of AI slop and why people are talking about it
AI slop is a term used to describe low quality, mass produced content created using AI. It usually refers to text, images, or videos that are technically complete but lack care, accuracy, or meaning.
The issue is not that AI is used. It is how it is used. When content is generated quickly, without proper checking or editing, small errors start to show. These can be subtle at first, slightly off phrasing, strange details, or inconsistencies, but they add up.
A recent example came when England’s national football team teased a new World Cup kit. People quickly spotted odd, AI like text within the design, something that looked finished at a glance but did not quite make sense on closer inspection. It was not a major failure, but it was enough to break trust in the detail.
That is often how “slop” shows up. Not as something obviously broken, but as something that feels slightly off.
As more content is generated at speed, the volume increases, but the signal does not always improve. And when everything looks polished on the surface, it becomes harder to tell what has been properly thought through and what has not.
So the question becomes, when content is easy to produce, what makes it worth paying attention to?
